2 common causes of stairway falls

On Behalf of Smalline and Harri | Mar 14, 2024 | Slip-And-Fall Accidents

In public buildings of more than one story, stairways are a common sight. They ensure that consumers can reach each floor of the building.

Unfortunately, using a stairway can be risky. Studies suggest that over a million people are injured in stairway falls every year. While many of these falls occur in a domestic setting, they also happen in stores and other businesses.

What are some of the most common causes of stairway falls?

1. Poor maintenance

Stairways should be well-maintained and clean. If the stairs are made of tiles or other hard materials, they should not be cracked or loose. For carpeted stairs, the material should be securely fastened. A loose piece of carpet on a stairway is an accident waiting to happen.

Stairways should also be kept clean and dry. When a spill has occurred, the area should be secured to prevent people from using it. The public should not be allowed to use the stairway until it has been cleaned and dried appropriately.

2. Lack of handrails

In some cases, a person cannot help losing their balance, which can result in a fall. However, handrails provide a safety net. They give people the chance to regain their balance and at least make the fall less severe. If handrails are not fitted or are in disrepair, people are not given the chance to regain their balance and potentially prevent serious injuries.

These are just two common factors that can result in stairway falls and injuries. If you have been injured in a building that is accessible to the public, you may be able to hold the owner or management of that premises to account. Seek legal guidance to find out more about premises liability claims.
